This song is called Mulatu in reference to legendary Ethiopian musician and father of ethio-jazz: Mulatu Astatke.
I wanted to write an ethio-jazz song in honor of Ethiopia, one of the only African countries that resisted and defeated Western colonialism.
George Floyd's death was infuriating and I wanted to channel that rage and put it in this song to remind myself that liberation is not something we can ask for, it is something that has to be taken.
I am so honored to have Vox Sambou as a featured artist and Jean-Michel Frédéric, Mark Haynes and Jepthé Kalombo as musicians on this song. They really brought the vision I had for this song to life with their incredible talent.
